| How
did the Maasai Evangelistic Association begin?
Established in 1996, the Maasai Evangelistic Association is a non-governmental,
Christian Organisation committed to rural Evangelism in Maasailand,
also promoting rural development and reducing poverty. It is registered
with the Kenyan Government under the Ministry of Culture and Social
Services, as a Community Based Organization.
- Our overriding goals are:
- to preach the good news of Jesus Christ to the people in their
communities;
to support development initiatives at local levels, in order to
reduce and eliminate poverty and suffering among the country's large
and growing population.
How we began
In 1987, a young Maasai pastor named David Ole Kereto
felt the Lord place a burden on his heart for the Maasai people
in Kenya and Tanzania. He started preaching to the Maasai in 1986
as an evangelist under the Africa Inland Church (A.I.C.). He went
to Nduluku Bible Institute in Machakos (Kenya) from 1987 to 1989,
and was later transferred to Kapsabet Bible College (Kenya) for
a High Diploma in Theology in 1990 to 1991. From April 1991 he has
been involved in full-time ministry among his own people, the Maasai.
There was a thick blanket of spiritual bondage among the Maasai
people. As heartbreaking and often hopeless as the situation appeared,
David knew very well that Jesus was the only hope for the Maasai
tribe, and he vowed to dedicate his life to proclaiming Christ among
the unreached of the Maasai with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And
so, the Maasai Evangelistic Association was founded. MEA surveyed
the almost overwhelming spiritual and physical needs that gripped
Maasailand, and developed a holistic vision statement to guide them
in their Outreach Mission to the Maasai. "For we preach not
ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord and ourselves your servants
for Jesus sake." 2 Corinthians 4:5.
